Whey2Value – Greening the dairy sector
Climate change, food insecurity, and malnutrition are some of the biggest challenges in Pakistan. The interdependency of these issues urges the need to find ways to simultaneously address all of them through integrated solutions, and this project serves as a prime example.
The dairy sector in Pakistan plays an important role in per capita greenhouse gas emissions, land use, water use, and eutrophication. This project addresses this by decreasing environmental pollution from waste streams from cheese production. The waste, whey-water, is transformed into a tasty, safe, affordable, and healthy drink for children. This fosters inclusive green private sector growth in the dairy sector, creates new revenue streams through new jobs in processing and distribution, particularly for youth and women, as well as addresses malnutrition among children in Pakistan.
