Greening San Andres – Sustainable tourism to reduce single use packaging

This project addresses the environmental challenges faced in San Andrés, Colombia, regarding waste generation and pollution impacting the marine coast. Reusable cups will replace single-use cups in the local chains of food & beverages. To keep track of cup returns, QR codes or NFC chips will be utilised, and corresponding credits will be issued. Communication will play a key role to encourage behaviour change. Moreover, the initiative generates employment opportunities in cup collection, washing, and return processes. This endeavour will lead to waste reduction, improved resource utilisation, and the adoption of sustainable practices in the tourism industry.

Beyond implementing a sustainable and circular approach to packaging, Kleen Hub’s system can stimulate local entrepreneurship, generate employment opportunities, and enhance the region’s tourism sector, contributing to the economic and social well-being of San Andrés. Ultimately, the project sets a model for Colombia’s regions to adopt sustainable practices, aiming for a greener and more prosperous future.
