Creating climate-smart, financially sustainable water solutions for improved livelihoods in Kenya
WaterStarters adopts an ecosystem approach to protect people, animals, and the environment from climate change impact by providing sustainable water solutions. The project aimed to deliver safe and clean water through an innovative financial model, enhancing economic growth and improving livelihoods for rural and peri-urban communities in Kenya. It aimed to make franchisees and their communities, especially girls and women, more economically resilient and reduce climate-related water and health issues.
WaterStarters successfully implemented two climate-smart water projects in Kajiado County, Kenya, providing reliable and sustainable water access to 6,000 people. The projects involved drilling and rehabilitating boreholes, installing solar-powered submersible pumps, and a connection to existing water distribution networks. Although the on-boarding process was slower than expected, these two viable business cases demonstrate the potential for sustainable water management. WaterStarters blended financing model demonstrated the potential to raise at least 15% private capital in the water sector through franchise contributions
