Closing the Loop on Plastic Waste in Coastal Kenya

This project supports the growth of Kenya’s circular plastics market by scaling traceable, fair trade plastic recycling and enabling full value chain transparency. Led by Mr. Green Africa (MGA), a leading certified B Corporation, the initiative expands MGA’s sourcing networks along Kenya’s coast, integrating over 5,000 informal waste collectors into formal recycling markets.

Driven by global brand demand for responsibly sourced recycled plastics – from companies such as Unilever and Coca-Cola – MGA will scale production of high-quality post-consumer recyclate (PCR) for export and domestic markets. Digital innovations, including Empower’s “plastic passport” system, will enable full traceability from collection to final product, while cBrain’s Central Registry System (CRS) will ensure regulatory compliance under Kenya’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework.

By building market infrastructure for EPR-compliant recycled plastics, the project will unlock new revenue streams, increase demand for recycled content, and reduce dependence on virgin plastics. It positions Kenya as a regional leader in circular economy solutions, aligned with EU market requirements and Kenya’s national climate and green growth targets.
