Building Climate Resilience: Strengthening Sustainable Farming and Food Security in Ethiopia

This project accelerates commercialisation of Ethiopia’s dairy and malt barley sectors by building business capacity among farmer-led cooperatives and connecting them to formal markets. Implemented by Agriterra, in partnership with Heineken Breweries S.C. and Holland Dairy, the project supports 20 cooperatives and over 20,000 smallholders in adopting professional, market-oriented practices.

Through tailored advisory support and peer-to-peer learning, the initiative strengthens governance, financial management, and supply chain integration. Farmers gain access to pre-financing, quality inputs, and reliable offtake agreements – enabling them to meet industry standards and increase income through higher yields and value addition.

By aligning with Ethiopia’s Agricultural Commercialisation Clusters and Homegrown Economic Reform Agenda, the project creates inclusive growth opportunities and supports green industrialisation. It also offers a scalable model for public-private collaboration in transforming smallholder cooperatives into competitive agribusinesses.
