Clean Energy Drinking Water Solutions

The objective of this project was to mature the commercial distribution model in Kenya of the SaWa (safe water) solar-purified, affordable, and climate-friendly drinking water solutions produced by 4LifeSolutions (4LS). Through the structures of MYWO, Africa’s largest women’s organisation, women are targeted as SaWa sales agents in their local communities thereby contributing to their economic and social empowerment. Beyond reducing waterborne diseases, greenhouse gas emissions, and deforestation, providing SaWa products to women and girls in rural Kenya promotes gender equality by decreasing the time spent collecting water and firewood.

While testing different distribution models resulting in sales of 7.500 SaWa units, the project partners developed and fine-tuned a viable business case for 4LS and for SaWa sales agents. Key achievements include:

For 4LS, the business model was optimized through analysis of distribution networks, price points, and scaling strategies. This resulted in a refined approach to market entry and operational efficiency That at scale it will be a viable business case for 4Life Solution.

For sales agents, financial incentives (commissions) were tailored to reflect the volume of sales, ensuring motivation and sustained engagement. The Peer-to-Peer sales model was adjusted to account for local challenges and opportunities, enhancing agent retention and profitability, this is a viable business for when scaled.

The collaboration between the project partners has continued after the project aiming at scaling-up the identified business model.
